(and i know these series’ are fabricated in the realm of the unrealistic, but some aspects, such as Kiara’s rape in the second book was handled really well, and i loved her and Nino. she just romanticises the entire traumatic ordeal to fit her storyline, so the whole thing was unrealistic in that sense. he continuously threatens, objectifies and degrades her, and i honestly would have expected more trauma from a victim of kidnap, but i think that was the issue- Reilly didn’t even portray Serafina as a victim and glossed over the realities of someone being held captive. but honestly it did just feel like Remo raped her and used small acts of kindness to manipulate her. Id assumed things weren’t what they seemed from Dante’s POV. and i wanted to see how things ACTUALLY went down between Serafina and Remo after reading everything from Dante’s POV first. i read Bound by the Past first so i knew the general gist of this book so it piqued my interest before id even started this series. So for me, the religious and cultural depths that the novels swam in were more rewarding than the evolution of the "Ghost in the machine" device of the AI character Jane, which bored me. What I really liked about Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide were the characters and the neat ideas that Card was exploring, especially the anthropological aspects, rather than the traditional "scifi tech" angles. It does get a little more personal, but the thought provoking ideas and the profound views are amazing. Chase wrote: "What didn't you like about Children of the Mind? In Murder by the Book, Claire Harman blends a riveting true-crime whodunit with a fascinating account of the rise of the popular novel and the early battle for its soul among the most famous writers of the day. But when the prime suspect claimed to have been inspired by a sensational crime novel, it sent shock waves through literary London and drew both Dickens and Thackeray into the fray. The crime soon had everyone, including Queen Victoria, feverishly speculating about motives and methods. Early on the morning of May 6, 1840, the elderly Lord William Russell was found in his London house with his throat so deeply cut that his head was nearly severed. ![]() ![]() Men differ in character and conduct according as they live on mountains, plains, or the sea.
